Reliable quality
for demanding environments

A well-organised warehouse isn’t just about “looking neat” — it directly impacts picking speed, staff safety, and stock accuracy. The good news? You don’t need a full overhaul to see improvement. Here are seven practical, low-cost wins you can apply this week.

1) Start with high-movement stock

Identify your top 20% fastest-moving items and place them closer to dispatch or packing areas. This reduces walking time, speeds up picking, and keeps traffic flowing in busy zones.

2) Use bins for small parts (and keep sizes consistent)

Loose items on shelves create mess and slow down picking. Stack & hang bins make it easier to separate parts, maintain order, and restock quickly. Where possible, standardise bin sizes per aisle so shelves stay clean and predictable.

3) Label shelves, bays, and bins clearly

If someone needs to “search” for stock, you’ve already lost time. Simple, consistent labels help teams locate items quickly and reduce picking errors — especially when new staff step in.

4) Create dedicated zones (and stick to them)

A few clear zones go a long way:

  • Receiving
  • Quarantine/returns
  • Bulk storage
  • Picking
  • Dispatch
  • Even small operations benefit from defined zones — it reduces confusion and prevents stock from “floating” around the warehouse.

5) Keep walkways clear with smart layout choices

Trolleys and mobile handling gear are great for workflow, but they need a “home”. Allocate parking areas for trolleys and pallets so walkways stay open and safe.

6) Improve vertical space with proper racking or shelving

If your floor space is tight, use height. Reliable shelving and racking help you store more without cluttering aisles. If you’re planning an upgrade, think about your product sizes, picking method, and future growth before choosing your layout.

7) Schedule a simple weekly reset

A 20–30 minute reset at the same time each week can prevent months of chaos:

  • Return stray items to correct zones
  • Repack open boxes
  • Clear walkways
  • Check labels and damaged containers
  • Small routines keep standards high without needing a major clean-up later.
